Abstract
Countercultures rely on information and news industries for their survival and expansion in response to dominant values and norms. The assessment of any social phenomenon requires the identification of appropriate indicators; accordingly, the primary objective of this study is to identify and formulate the indicators of counterculture in the media. The data, obtained through documentary and library research, an expert group, and scholarly interviews, were analyzed using thematic analysis.
The findings indicate that countercultural indicators in news media can be formulated across four overarching dimensions: psychological-motivational, structural, behavioral, and discursive. The psychological-motivational dimension encompasses such components as peer pressure, perfectionism, resistance to domination, disclosure, sectarianism, insults, and ridicule. The structural dimension includes alternative, independent, investigative, and critical journalism, underground media, and mechanisms such as echo chambers and algorithms that reinforce polarization. Behavioral indicators were formulated in terms of sensationalist journalism, criticism, satire, caricature, parody, media representation, and forms of artistic protest. At the discursive level, prominent indicators included news distortion, opposition to censorship, claims for rights, demands for transparency and accountability, and advocacy of social justice. The findings further indicate that the emergence and expansion of media-based countercultures are associated with dissatisfaction with dominant values and norms, social inequality, weakened social capital, crises of trust, and the inefficiency of certain political and economic mechanisms. The media also play a significant role in reinforcing and disseminating these countercultural patterns.
The policy analysis indicates that restrictive approaches based on suppression and censorship have limited capacity to manage this phenomenon and may, in some cases, contribute to the emergence of underground media. By contrast, interactive governance, the promotion of media literacy, social dialogue, balanced representation, and support for professional independent media offer greater potential for managing cultural divisions and reducing discursive conflicts. Accordingly, media-based counterculture should be understood as a phenomenon closely related to cultural and media policymaking and governance, requiring a multilevel, participatory system based on continuous monitoring and analysis.
