In recent decades, the phenomenon of tattooing has attracted the attention of researchers as a multidimensional social, cultural, and psychological phenomenon. The aim of this study is to understand the semantic implications of tattoos among the youth of Mahabad city. To achieve this goal, the study was conducted with a social interpretive approach using a qualitative data-based method. The statistical population of this study included young people aged 15 to 35 in Mahabad city who had at least one tattoo experience on their bodies. The sampling method in this study was two-stage purposive and snowball sampling, which was achieved after interviewing 23 people. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participatory observation and analyzed using a three-stage coding method (open, axial, and selective). After coding, a total of 6 core categories were identified, including ambiguous and multi-layered identities, generational and social conflicts, multi-layered symbol selection, psychological needs, inhibitory structures, and facilitating structures, which are mutually related to the central category. Also, the central category of “redefining identity through the body as a space of resistance” was extracted from the findings as the core concept of the research. The results of the research showed that tattooing among the youth of Mahabad is not only an aesthetic act, but also a meaningful social action that is rooted in the psychological, identity, and protest needs of the individual. This concept shows that the youth of Mahabad use the tattooed body as a space to redefine their personal, cultural, and ethnic identities against dominant social structures and institutions.
