Introduction: Counterculture constitutes an important dimension of cultural dynamics and refers to patterns of meaning, values, norms, and lifestyles that emerge in a critical or conflictual relationship with dominant culture. In contemporary societies, news media and information industries have become important arenas for the representation, reproduction, dissemination, and transformation of countercultural patterns. The expansion of digital communication platforms and changes in news consumption have further blurred the boundaries between dominant culture, popular culture, and counterculture. Consequently, identifying appropriate indicators is essential for systematically assessing the presence and characteristics of countercultural phenomena in media environments. Such indicators can provide an analytical basis for distinguishing different manifestations of counterculture and understanding the social and communicative mechanisms through which they are reproduced. The present study therefore seeks to identify, categorize, and formulate the principal indicators of counterculture in news media. The study also examines the conditions associated with the emergence and expansion of media-based countercultures and considers the implications of the identified indicators for cultural and media policymaking.<br>Methods: This study employed a qualitative research design based on thematic analysis. Data were collected through documentary and library research, expert group discussions, and interviews with scholars and experts. The use of multiple sources enabled the researchers to examine countercultural indicators from theoretical, documentary, and expert perspectives. The collected materials were subjected to thematic analysis to identify recurring concepts, patterns, and relationships associated with counterculture in information and news industries. The analysis focused on formulating indicators and organizing them into broader conceptual categories. In addition, a policy-oriented perspective was applied to interpret the findings and examine their implications for cultural governance and media policy. Stakeholder- and systems-oriented considerations were incorporated into the interpretation of the findings, with particular attention to the mechanisms through which media structures, communicative practices, social conditions, and discursive patterns interact in the reproduction of countercultural phenomena. The analytical process sought to establish a systematic relationship among empirical evidence, conceptual categories, and policy implications.<br>Findings:‌ The findings indicate that countercultural indicators in news media can be organized into four overarching dimensions: psychological-motivational, structural, behavioral, and discursive. The psychological-motivational dimension includes factors such as peer pressure, perfectionism, resistance to domination, exposure and disclosure, sectarianism, insults, and ridicule. The structural dimension encompasses alternative, independent, investigative, and critical journalism, underground media, and technological mechanisms such as echo chambers and polarization-reinforcing algorithms. The behavioral dimension includes sensationalist reporting, criticism, satire, caricature, parody, media representation, and artistic protest, while the discursive dimension comprises news distortion, opposition to censorship, rights claims, demands for transparency and accountability, and social justice claims. The emergence and expansion of these countercultural patterns are associated with dissatisfaction with dominant values and norms, social inequalities, declining social capital, crises of trust, and deficiencies in political and economic mechanisms. Media and communication platforms also contribute to their amplification, circulation, and reproduction.<br>Conclusion: The study concludes that counterculture in news media should be understood as a multidimensional cultural and communicative phenomenon with significant implications for cultural and media policymaking. The four-dimensional framework identified in this research provides an analytical basis for monitoring and assessing countercultural indicators across motivational, structural, behavioral, and discursive levels. The policy analysis further suggests that approaches based primarily on restriction, suppression, and censorship have limited capacity to address countercultural phenomena and may, under certain conditions, contribute to the development or strengthening of underground media. More interactive approaches, including the promotion of media literacy, social dialogue, balanced media representation, and support for professional independent media, offer greater potential for addressing cultural divisions and reducing discursive tensions. Accordingly, effective policy responses require a multidimensional and participatory approach based on continuous monitoring, systematic analysis, and an improved understanding of the social and media conditions associated with counterculture. The findings provide a conceptual framework that can be used in subsequent empirical research to operationalize countercultural indicators and assess their prevalence and effects across different media environments.
